How long does a skills assessment actually take?

It depends on the authority, the occupation, and the evidence. Here are current 2026 turnaround times and what drives the variation. Our skilled migration specialist Gurjeev Bhalla coordinates assessments.

By authority

Five major assessors.

Each assessing authority has its own structure and timeline.

ACS (IT occupations)

8-10 weeks standard. Priority ~4 weeks at additional fee. Generally the fastest major assessor. See ACS guide.

Engineers Australia

4-8 weeks standard. Chartered status applicants often faster. Priority options available.

TRA (trades)

4-8 weeks for OSA. JRP longer due to multi-stage process. Practical assessments add time.

VETASSESS (most professional)

10-14 weeks standard. Priority at additional fee (~5-6 weeks). Broad occupation coverage. See VETASSESS guide.

AHPRA (health)

Varies widely by profession. Nurses 8-16 weeks typical. Doctors longer. Registration process parallel with assessment.

CPA/CA ANZ (accounting)

6-10 weeks typical for completed applications. Membership requirements add time for non-members.

What drives the variation

Four factors.

Same authority can deliver assessments faster or slower for different applicants.

Completeness at lodgementComplete applications with strong evidence process fastest. Incomplete applications trigger requests for further information adding weeks.
Occupation complexitySome occupations are common and well-understood (software engineer, civil engineer). Others are niche and require more adjudication.
Employment verificationAuthorities often contact referees. If referees are hard to reach or slow to respond, processing extends.
Priority optionsMost major authorities offer priority assessment at additional fee. Approximately halves the turnaround time.
Planning around assessment time

Three practical steps.

Skills assessment sits before visa lodgement. Planning matters.

Start early

Begin assessment work months before visa lodgement. Gathering references alone takes weeks.

Priority when needed

If visa lodgement deadline is tight, priority assessment is often worth the additional fee.

Validity period

Most skills assessments valid for 3 years. Plan visa lodgement within this window.

Most delays are evidence-related, not authority-related.

Applications that sit waiting on applicant-supplied evidence account for most perceived "slow" assessments. The authority cannot act until the file is complete. Upfront complete evidence is the single biggest time-saver.

Common questions

The questions we hear most.

For skills assessment timing, book with Gurjeev Bhalla.

Can I submit my EOI before my skills assessment is complete?
Technically the EOI requires a positive skills assessment reference. Lodging EOI without one is not compliant. Wait for assessment.
What if my assessment is refused?
Most authorities have internal review. Some allow fresh assessment with new evidence. See fixing refused assessments.
Does priority assessment guarantee fastest processing?
Nearly always significantly faster, but authorities may still request additional evidence. Complete submissions plus priority is the strongest approach.
Can I apply for multiple skills assessments at once?
Technically yes, across different authorities. Usually not strategic unless genuinely unsure which assessment is optimal.
