Trades Recognition Australia · OSA · JRP · Trade Pathway

TRA is the assessing authority for most trade occupations.

Carpenters, electricians, plumbers, welders, chefs, hairdressers, vehicle mechanics. TRA runs multiple assessment pathways, each designed for different applicant circumstances. Choosing the wrong one can cost a year of time or result in outright refusal. Strategy before lodgement is the single highest-value step.

TRA pathways

Four assessment routes.

TRA offers different assessment pathways depending on where qualifications and experience were obtained.

Offshore Skills Assessment (OSA)

For applicants with overseas qualifications and experience. Documentary assessment of qualifications, training, and work experience. Most common pathway.

Job Ready Program (JRP)

For applicants with Australian qualifications seeking trade assessment. Four stages including Provisional Skills Assessment, Employment, Workplace Assessment.

Migration Skills Assessment (MSA)

For skilled worker program applicants. Combined documentary and sometimes practical assessment.

Practical assessment

Where documents are insufficient to establish competency, TRA may require practical trade assessment. Conducted by approved assessors.

What TRA assesses

Qualifications, training, experience.

TRA looks at three elements to determine equivalence to Australian standards.

QualificationsTrade qualifications, vocational certificates, or equivalent training. Overseas qualifications mapped to Australian equivalents.
Formal training hoursApprenticeship or formal training hours documented. Australian standard is typically 3-4 years of formal training.
Work experienceDocumented skilled trade work experience. Reference letters with specific duties, hours, dates, supervisor contact.
Referees and verificationTRA may contact referees and verify employment. Accurate and consistent documentation matters.
Common TRA issues

Three frequent problem patterns.

TRA refusals often follow identifiable patterns that can be avoided with proper preparation.

Insufficient training hours

Overseas apprenticeships sometimes fall short of Australian standards. Gap training or alternative pathways may apply.

Work experience documentation gaps

Reference letters lacking specific duties or hours get weak results. Rewriting reference letters with duties-mapped detail matters.

Occupation code mismatch

Claiming an occupation that does not match the duties or training. TRA may re-code or refuse. See CSOL.

TRA is the gateway for many trade migration pathways.

Without a positive TRA outcome, skilled trade migration is generally not possible. TRA timelines (4-12 weeks for OSA depending on occupation and complexity) should be built into migration planning well in advance. Rushing TRA lodgement without strong documentation is the most common cause of negative outcomes.

Common questions

The questions we hear most.

For TRA applications, book with Gurjeev Bhalla or Sourabh Aggarwal.

Do I need my qualifications in English?
Yes. Non-English qualifications must be translated by NAATI-certified translators. Original documents provided with translations.
How long does a TRA assessment take?
OSA: typically 4-8 weeks. JRP: longer due to multi-stage structure including workplace assessment. Practical assessment adds time.
Can I appeal a negative TRA assessment?
TRA has internal review. Fresh assessments with additional evidence also possible. External appeal rights are limited.
Does TRA assessment expire?
Yes. Typically 3 years. Visa lodgement should be well within this window.
