Evidence gaps or inconsistencies
Where written evidence is thin or inconsistent, the Department may use an interview to probe.
For interview coaching Neha Sharma runs mock interviews with couples on the 820 and 309 pathways. If you are called for one, the case officer has flagged something in your file they want to test directly. The way you handle the interview usually determines the outcome. Here is what to expect, how the Department assesses credibility, and how we prepare clients.
Interviews are not random. The Department has concerns it wants to resolve.
Where written evidence is thin or inconsistent, the Department may use an interview to probe.
Where cohabitation evidence is borderline or the 12-month timeline is close. See de facto evidence guide.
Where the applicant or sponsor has prior refusals, cancellations, or immigration issues.
Some applications are flagged by Department systems or referred from other agencies. Interviews follow.
Questions typically fall into four categories probing specific aspects of the relationship.
Interview preparation is not memorisation. It is organisation of true information.
Re-read every document you submitted. The interviewer has read them. Inconsistencies with interview answers create credibility concerns.
Vague answers invite follow-up. Specific, dated, named answers are credible. If you do not know something, say so honestly.
We run mock interviews with clients when interviews are scheduled. Practice reveals weak spots and builds confidence.
The Department interviews applicant and sponsor separately and compares answers. Large inconsistencies (different versions of how you met, different descriptions of daily life, different future plans) suggest the relationship may not be genuine. Preparing together beforehand is essential.
