Or an immigration officer at a border needs to hold your lawful status while you prepare a proper application. The BVD is a short-term emergency bridge. It is granted by immigration officers in specific circumstances, not on request.
When a BVD applies

For people still in the process of immigration clearance at a border who need lawful status while making a full application.
5-day duration
Duration is typically 5 working days. Not extendable. On day 6, if no application is lodged, the holder becomes unlawful.
No work, no travel
BVDs do not generally grant work rights. They do not grant travel. They exist purely to hold the status quo.

What if I cannot lodge within 5 days?

Can a BVD be extended?
No. The BVD ends at day 5. A valid substantive lodgement during that window triggers a different bridging visa.
